Before reaching the award ceremony, the assessment process took place from May to August 2026 through field visits conducted by a pentahelix judging team. The visits were conducted without prior notification to provide a more objective picture of the actual conditions and management of each tourism village.
The assessment went beyond tourism attractions. It covered various aspects, including destination management, social and cultural preservation, economic impact on local communities, and environmental sustainability.
The competition also supports the development of Community-Based Tourism (CBT), which places local communities at the center of planning, management, decision-making, and the benefits generated through tourism.
Following the assessment process, Gabugan Tourism Village achieved a score of 5,260, earning 3rd Place in the 2026 DIY Tourism Village Competition.
Receiving the award directly from DIY Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X marked an important milestone in Gabugan Tourism Village's development journey.
For Gabugan, however, this award is not the end of the journey.
It serves as both recognition and motivation to continuously improve destination management, services, visitor experiences, promotion, and the benefits tourism brings to the local community.
Behind every award is a long journey that cannot be accomplished by one individual or organization alone.
Gabugan's achievement reflects the collective contribution of the local community, tourism village management, MSMEs, artists and cultural groups, community organizations, government institutions, partners, and many other stakeholders who have supported the development of Gabugan Tourism Village.
From maintaining the environment and welcoming visitors to providing homestays, preserving agricultural activities, maintaining arts and traditions, developing local culinary products, and introducing Gabugan through digital media, every contribution has played a role in this journey.
This spirit of gotong royong, or mutual cooperation, remains one of Gabugan's greatest strengths.
Gabugan Tourism Village continues to embrace the spirit of Rural Culture Experience, inviting visitors to discover and learn directly from authentic rural life.
These experiences are presented through various educational activities, from traditional farming experiences such as rice field plowing, rice planting, and exploring salak orchards to batik making, traditional music, local culinary activities, and direct interaction with the community.
Through these experiences, Gabugan aims to be more than simply a place to visit. It seeks to become a place to learn, interact, and understand rural culture and community life more closely.
The presence of Donokerto Village Head R. Waluyo Jati, S.T., Turi District Head Joko Susilo, S.P., M.Si., Sleman Regent H. Harda Kiswaya, S.E., M.Si., and DIY Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X during this important occasion reflects the support surrounding the development of tourism villages.
Sleman Regent Harda Kiswaya also expressed his appreciation for the achievements of the tourism village managers. The recognition is expected to encourage tourism villages to continue improving and strengthening community-based tourism.
For Gabugan Tourism Village, collaboration and support across different levels of government are important foundations for improving the destination while maintaining the culture, character, and community life that define Gabugan.
Winning 3rd Place in the 2026 DIY Tourism Village Competition is about more than a ranking.
For Gabugan Tourism Village, this recognition represents an opportunity to evaluate, improve, and take the next steps forward.
Future development will continue to focus on improving visitor experiences, strengthening human resources and institutional management, preserving culture and the environment, utilizing digital technology, developing local products, and increasing the economic benefits of tourism for the community.
By maintaining its rural character and local values, Gabugan Tourism Village aims to continue developing as a high-quality and sustainable educational tourism destination that provides meaningful benefits for its community.
This achievement is a source of pride and the result of a collective effort.
Gabugan Tourism Village extends its gratitude to the entire Gabugan community, Donokerto Village Government, Turi District Government, Sleman Regency Government, Sleman Tourism Office, Government of the Yogyakarta Special Region, DIY Tourism Office, partners, and everyone who has provided support and guidance throughout this journey.
Our gratitude also goes to every visitor who has come to Gabugan, learned with us, shared stories, and become part of our journey.
This award does not belong to the management alone. It is a shared achievement of the Gabugan community.
The journey continues. May this achievement bring new energy to keep learning, innovating, preserving our culture, caring for the environment, and creating increasingly meaningful experiences.
